"Symbiosis” (SSSAAATTTBBB) is a soundscape of the hidden, living web flourishing beneath the forest floor. Inspired by the work of British Columbia’s Dr. Suzanne Simard, the piece sonically explores a vast underground network where tree roots and fungal mycelium intertwine in a constant, life-sustaining symbiotic exchange.

In writing this work, I imagined the choir as a living ecosystem whose individual voices mimic tree roots and fungal mycelium—intertwining and collectively pushing through dense, structural walls of sound much like tree roots boring through tightly packed soil in an intricate act of mutual survival and communication. Symbiosis is a exploration of interdependence, challenging us to listen to the ancient, collaborative intelligence whispering beneath our feet.

I wrote "Symbiosis” for Musica Intima’s NOVUM 2026, and look forward to the upcoming masterclass with Ko Matsushita and its premiere in November 2026.
